Most transfer speculation surrounding Aston Villa this summer has been about departures from Villa Park. The club are in a delicate position financially having failed to win promotion back to the Premier League and now risk losing a host of their key players. One player who could be joining the Villans, however, is David McGoldrick – although he may not possess the sort of firepower than can guide Villa back to English football’s top division.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa as well as West Brom and Bristol City are in talks to sign McGoldrick. McGoldrick is a free agent after leaving Ipswich, which makes him an attractive prospect to Villa who simply do not have the money to spend on transfer fees.
Lewis Grabban is also not expected to make a return to Villa Park with Nottingham Forest (via the Sun) and Birmingham City said to be interested in the 30-year-old’s services making Steve Bruce’s search for a striker an even more urgent one.
McGoldrick’s goalscoring record in recent Championship seasons, however, isn’t the most convincing. Aston Villa should instead look to Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, who is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, if Premier League promotion is actually a goal for the upcoming season.
In what would be a loan deal, getting Abraham through the door wouldn’t be the most expensive of transfers and the 20-year-old has already shown his efficiency in front of goal in the Championship.
The Chelsea striker scored 23 goals in English football’s second division while out on loan at Bristol City during the 2016/17 season.
Ultimately, Abraham possesses the sort of goalscoring ability that can help Villa return to the big time and should be pursued at all costs ahead of McGoldrick.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
