Having just missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing 1-0 to Fulham in the Championship play-off final, Aston Villa will be desperate to go that one step further the next time round. And a current outcast could be the player to help them at least challenge for another promotion shot.
Aston Villa’s promotion failure has hit the club hard. The Villans’ financial situation is so bad that even bringing in free transfers has apparently become a difficult task.
The financial crisis taking place at Villa Park right now has also ensured that the likes of Robert Snodgrass, Sam Johnstone and Lewis Grabban will not be returning after their loan spells with the Midlands club last season.
John Terry, too, has departed with Jack Grealish set to follow, according to the Daily Mirror.
Considering all of the above, it is hard to see how Aston Villa could possibly compete for promotion once again, especially when players such as David McGoldrick are being lined up as a possible incoming.
Instead, manager Steve Bruce should look to bring back Ross McCormack, who is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, from the cold if he is looking to sign a striker during this window.
McCormack’s move to Villa Park has obviously not worked out, but the 31-year-old’s goalscoring record is on a different scale compared to McGoldrick.
While integrating McCormack back into the team offers no guarantees of success, the Scotland international is a much more prolific striker than McGoldrick and considering Villa’s transfer budget, or lack of one, the club are unlikely to find anyone else of McCormack’s pedigree.
It, without a doubt, seems highly unlikely at this moment in time. But for a club of Aston Villa’s stature, promotion has to be the aim, and the club need a striker with McCormack’s previous goalscoring exploits if they are to have any hope of returning to the Premier League.Like what the TT have on offer?
