Aston Villa are still hanging on to the slimmest chance of achieving promotion this season, no matter how farfetched that dream now seems to be.

Dean Smith has simply not been able to get his side playing consistently and that will be frustrating for the former Brentford boss.

For all the talented players he has available, Aston Villa, like seasons past, Smith has failed to deliver when it counts the most.

It seems that Championship football will again be on show at Villa Park next season and that's extremely disheartening for those fans watching on.

A strong summer transfer window would be the key to any potential success but its whether they still have the ability to acquire some decent players.

Although he's struggled this season, Manchester United's Timothy Fosu-Mensah could revive his career in claret and blue.

Fosu-Mensah, (who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt) would have hoped to play an integral part in Fulham's Premier League return this season but for all involved, it hasn't been a success, in fact far from it.

The Cottagers seem destined to go back down into the Championship and Timothy Fosu-Mensah has had no luck in trying to prevent that.

With just 10 appearances so far this season, the Dutchman is very unlikely to be staying at Craven Cottage but could make up for his poor loan spell by moving to Aston Villa instead.

For how bad Villa have been defensively at times this season, Fosu-Mensah could be the solution to improving their back-line.

Dean Smith may struggle to find better value for money than what Fosu-Mensah offers, and if he could produce the performances he previously has, Aston Villa will have a good defender on their books.
