Aston Villa remain unbeaten in the Championship this season and are currently sitting inside the play-off places after five games.
The Villains look to be a force to be reckoned with in the current campaign as their financial issues are long gone having drafted in a number of quality players. Interestingly, Villa have been able to attract the likes of Anwar El Ghazi and Yannick Bolasie to the club, which will definitely help them challenge for automatic promotion.
Steve Bruce’s side will travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United later on today in what will be an extremely tough encounter for the Villains. The Blades haven’t exactly been at their best so far this season but they did manage to gain some momentum last time out and are always a dominant force in front of their home fans.
Interestingly, one man who failed to secure a place in the starting lineup against Reading in their last Championship outing was Glenn Whelan, who is currently valued at £1.35 million (by Transfermarkt).
Sadly, the 34-year-old is coming towards the end of his career but he can still do the job for Villa in the middle of the park. Indeed, the central midfielder has only managed to feature on two occasions in the Championship for the Villains so far this season, but his experience will be crucial as time goes on in their pursuit of promotion.
Aston Villa will need to deploy a defensive-minded midfielder in the middle of the park against a side like Sheffield United, and Glenn Whelan is the perfect man for the job. Indeed, the Republic of Ireland international adopts a dogged approach on the field and doesn’t take any prisoners, so he will be vital when it comes down to intercepting.
