The former Chelsea midfielder was tipped for big things at Stamford Bridge but failed to impress and moved to then Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa.
Sidwell has struggled during his time at Villa Park and has never re-found the form that won him a move to big spending Chelsea.
The 28-year-old looks set to join the Hammers in a deal worth £250’000. The cash strapped club have been linked to several targets this year as they have struggled for results in the league.
Grant had previously worked with Sidwell at Chelsea but bids from rival clubs have stalled any confirmation of the deal.
“I don’t know, I am not dealing with the situation and I don’t have any news but we are continuing to look at this situation,” Grant told Sky Sports News.
“I said that I like him, I worked with him at Chelsea, he is a good person and that is part of the atmosphere we are trying to create here.
“I don’t know as it is not up to me at the moment.”
Grant had previously expressed his interest in Sidwell citing a lack of squad depth as his reasoning.
“I want Steve Sidwell because today we didn’t have one midfielder on the bench.
“We need to be a little stronger in some areas, especially as we have some long-term injuries. We are doing everything to sign a few players to make the squad stronger.”
