According to The Mirror, Everton will allow defender Mason Holgate to leave the club on loan in January.
The 22-year-old is behind Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma in the pecking order at Goodison Park, and as a consequence, manager Marco Silva thinks it would be best for him to ply his trade elsewhere for now.
Of course, this will cause the ears to prick up for a number of Premier League and Championship clubs, who will be very keen to make a swoop for the England under-21 international. But there is one club that may need to make this signing more than any other and that is Aston Villa.
The Villans’ troubles at the back this season have been well-documented, and it may have ultimately been the key to manager Steve Bruce’s downfall. Their alarming dearth in centre-backs has seen the likes of Mile Jedinak and Alan Hutton try and fill in there to not much avail.
Only five teams in the Championship have conceded more goals than The Lions this season, but the club still remain with touching distance of the top six- only four points behind sixth-place Middlesbrough. It only seems logical that the club would climb further up the table if they address their greatest weakness in January.
Dean Smith has done a fantastic job at Villa Park since arriving, but there is only so much he can do with limited resources. Landing Holgate may be the defining transfer of their season, and could suddenly make the club promotion candidates.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
