Gerard Houllier’s double swoop for Frederic Piquionne and Robbie Keane has been foiled by Everton boss David Moyes.
Moyes, desperate for some fresh fire power up top, will now join the race to sign Piquionne in particular, who could leave Upton Park for as little as £4.5million.
The Scot will have to work hard though to secure the services of the Frenchman over Houllier, given that Villa boss has a history of working with Piquionne at Lyon.
That may leave Everton with only the chequebook as cannon fodder in the fight for the striker’s services; inflating the 31-year-old’s price in the mean time.
This will be music to the ears of cash strapped West Ham who are also looking to offload Carlton Cole in January and bring in some cheaper striking talent. £10million should be enough to see Cole leave Upton Park with many believing that Liverpool will be his probable destination.
Piquionne has hit the net four times this season but will be desperate to improve on his tally come January. The Frenchman has never been prolific, but goals have been hard to come by for Moyes and Houllier of late.
Robbie Keane has only notched 7 appearances for Spurs this campaign and is yet to contribute a single league strike, however, a “player of the season” performance at Celtic on loan last year will have kept many managers interested.
Spurs boss Redknapp has ruled out any chance of a loan move in January and any move will be on a transfer only basis. Fulham and MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps have also been linked to Keane.
