Aston Villa’s hope of signing Juan Manuel Vargas as a replacement for the outgoing Stewart Downing seems all but dead and buried.
Valued around £12m, Peruvian Vargas also known as El-Loco (“The Madman”) started off as a left sided defender, but has been transformed in to an attacking winger. He is known for his dribbling skills and his accurate crosses, not to mention his ability to take set pieces.
Still only 23, and captain of his National team, he has recently been targeted by some of the big European Clubs. Despite this, Vargas appears more than happy plying his trade in Serie A, and his current employers Fiorentina seem reluctant to let him go.
A perfect Replacement for Stuart Downing… maybe. But would a player of such talent really want to move to a club who has just sold two of their Best players, and had one of their worst seasons.
“Ever since I joined Fiorentina, I have always had a great relationship with the club and the fans. The Della Valle family have always expressed their faith in me.
These are reasons as to why I have no intention of swapping the Viola jersey for next season.”
A more realistic target would be Charles N’Zogbia. Wigan would be willing to let him exit the DW for around £9m, and he could soon be one of Alex Mcleish first signing.
