Aston Villa fans here in the Tavern are praying that their side can secure promotion in the current campaign, as they’re currently preparing for the challenges of the Championship play-offs.
The Villains established themselves as automatic promotion contenders after beating Premier League-bound Wolves at Villa Park, but they will now have to settle for the play-offs after struggling for consistency in recent times.
Although, it looks as if manager Steve Bruce is already looking ahead to the start of the summer transfer window, as according to The Mirror’s Friday Transfer news Live blog (15:38), Villa will try to sign Gareth Barry if they win promotion to the Premier League.
But, with plenty of other improvements needing to be made before the start of the next campaign, Villa should start looking at other potential signings that could have a positive effect on their future.
With that in mind, here’s who our local punters think should follow Barry to Villa Park…
Aston Villa should look to raid another Premier League relegation contender for one of their star players, as Charlie Austin would be a great addition if they are preparing for the challenges of top-flight football.
Indeed, the Englishman has struggled with an injury in the current campaign but he still finds himself as Southampton’s top scorer, having shown that he can find the back of the net on a regular basis at the highest level.
And, with the Saints looking like being relegated in the current campaign, Austin may be available for a small price in the summer transfer window as Villa may be able to hand him a lifeline in the Premier League.
