The January window is upon us and with every club being linked to someone or other, this month could be a huge one in shaping the fate of the Championship as everyone will look to improve. For Aston Villa, defenders are sorely needed, and as The Mirror have linked them with a loan move for Christian Fuchs, they simply have to pull this one off.
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson once said that attack wins you games, but defence wins you titles, and the way that Aston Villa have been going this season, they simply leak too many goals to be a side in the promotion hunt. Dean Smith is looking to remedy that, though, and having brought in Lovre Kalinic and Kourtney Hause, they’re certainly on the right path.
The only recognised left-back that Smith has available to him is Neil Taylor, however, the Welshman has suffered with injury this season and that will surely make a left-back a priority for the Villains. That’s where Christian Fuchs comes in. The Austrian defender has been at Leicester City for three and a half seasons now since making a move on a free from Schalke, and he was part of the Leicester’s Premier League winning side.
In the last few seasons, the dynamic has changed for the Foxes in the left-back position and Ben Chilwell has slowly usurped Fuchs to the point where the 32-year-old is looking to leave the King Power Stadium at the end of this season. His contract expires in the summer, but with limited game time, a loan to Villa Park would do him well before he looks to go to America and finish his career in the MLS.
What better way to bow out of English football than by winning promotion to the Premier League? That will be the argument that Smith will be putting across to Fuchs, and it’s one that the Austrian will need to take note of. If he was to drop down a division he would be a nailed on starter for the Villains. This season has seen him make just six appearances, and that figure could be quadrupled easily at Villa.
Dean Smith’s side are currently in a massive dog fight with only seven points separating the teams in 5th and 13th, the playoff places are still anyone’s to fill. If the Villa Park faithful were to bring in Fuchs, his defensive abilities would surely help in tightening up the backline, maybe to the point where the Villains can assert themselves in the battle for a playoff spot.
