January makeover: Aston Villa

January makeover: Aston Villa

Aston Villa weren’t able to assert their dominance and ensure any consistency under Steve Bruce, so they’ll certainly be hoping for better times under Dean Smith.

The Villains will be desperate to build up some momentum under Smith after a rather disappointing start to life in the Championship this season, with their promotion hopes still alive. Of course, there’re a couple of things that need to change in order for the Midlands club to really push on to try and challenge for a play-off spot this season.

Indeed, Villa could definitely do with bringing in a number of players to freshen things up and strengthen in what will be a long, tiring Championship campaign. So, the newly-appointed Aston Villa boss should already have his eyes on potential additions, with a busy January transfer window ahead.

With that in mind, here’s a look at Aston Villa’s potential new line-up after January…

ASTON VILLA’S POTENTIAL POST-JANUARY LINE-UP

Orjand Nyland has been one of the consistent performers at the club this season, with incredible saves and electric reflexes being the norm for the Norwegian.

Alan Hutton has been defensively sound in the current campaign but has room for improvement in attacking areas, while Dean Smith could look to bring one of his former players to Villa Park in the form of Denmark international Henrik Dalsgaard to operate on the right-hand side of defence. Also, James Chester could find himself playing next to a Premier League calibre central defender once again, with John Terry perhaps helping secure Gary Cahill.

John McGinn has been simply sensational since making the move to Villa Park during the summer, with a wonder strike never too far away. But, he hasn’t really been able to form a settled partnership in the middle of midfield, so Dean Smith could look to bring in Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, who has been linked with a loan move.

Yannick Bolasie was never really blessed with a starting place under Steve Bruce, but he should come to expect regular minutes in the side as one of the most skilful players in English football. And, another one of Smith’s former players could make his way to the Midlands in January, with the impressive Ollie Watkins possibly seeking a move.

Lastly, Jack Grealish will operate in the pocket of space behind the striker in the hope of rediscovering a rich vein of form, with the prolific Tammy Abraham leading the line for the Villains.
