Dean Smith watched his Aston Villa side slump to a 3-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic on Saturday in the Championship.
However, one man’s absence from the match at the DW Stadium appeared to attract plenty of attention – especially given that it is in the January transfer window.
Jonathan Kodjia was a surprise absentee from the squad and Smith explained after the match that he had picked up an ankle injury in training.
“It’s an ankle injury,” he is quoted as saying by the Birmingham Mail.
“He has been having treatment. I don’t think it will be too long. He has had ankle problems before. He gets a slight jolt on it and it is probably worse than others.”
Kodjia had missed a lot of action last season with an ankle injury and there will be concerns that he could miss further action.
The 29-year-old has not returned to his best form following the spell on the sidelines, however, Aston Villa will need everyone available to them to ensure they are able to continue their challenge for promotion.
However, performances on the pitch from everyone will most definitely need to improve if they are to have any chance of playing top-flight football next season.
