Juan Foyth would be an excellent partner for James Chester - Aston Villa

Aston Villa continued their positive start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon, although the Villans left Portman Road with a feeling of what might have been.

It’s difficult for Villa to feel disappointed after extending their unbeaten start to 3 matches, but after playing against 10 men for more than 50 minutes there’s no doubt that Steve Bruce will be feeling a tinge of regret this week.

But with time remaining in the loan window to bolster his options, Bruce needs to channel his regret into positive movement in the transfer market whilst he has the opportunity to bring new players in.

Although Villa were ultimately lacking the cutting edge in the final-third to break Ipswich down, they still have room for improvement defensively as their options at centre-back are looking sparse for the season ahead.

With that being said, Bruce should be targeting an ambitious loan move for one of Tottenham Hotspur’s brightest young sparks, namely Juan Foyth.

The Argentinian centre-back signed from Estudiantes in August 2017 for a fee of £11.7 million, but his first-team opportunities have been severely limited thus far due to the intense competition in Tottenham’s senior squad.

However, murmurs coming out of Tottenham suggest that Mauricio Pochettino has bookmarked Foyth as a talent for the future, and it’s likely that he will eventually play a key role in north London.

But Foyth is hardly likely to develop into a Champions League standard defender without adequate exposure to first-team football, so Villa should offer him the opportunity to showcase his talent in the Championship next season.

John Terry’s departure from Villa has left an opportunity for a centre-back to establish a solid partnership with James Chester at the heart of defence, with Axel Tuanzebe, Mile Jedinak and Tommy Elphick currently in competition for that role.

On the evidence of Foyth’s domestic cup performances in Tottenham white, he possesses the ability to fend off competition for a starting berth and slot in alongside Chester at centre-back.

With plenty of composure in possession and an astute reading of the game to bring to the table, Bruce would pull a masterstroke by signing Foyth on a season-long loan deal.
