Our Aston Villa fans here in the Transfer Tavern are desperate to see their side go out and sign some top players in the summer window as they aim for the Premier League.
The men from Villa Park have had a tough few seasons of late but there is hope now that the 2017/18 campaign is going to yield something to shout about.
Indeed, Steve Bruce certainly has the resources to make sure the club is up there in terms of challenging for promotion but we think he needs to really make a big statement of intent and sign Tom Cairney.
Certainly, Villa are one of the biggest clubs in England, not just the second tier, and most players at that level should relish the idea of helping them go up – with a view to further success in the top flight.
That line, then, is what Bruce should be using to attract the likes of Cairney who missed out on promotion with Fulham this season just gone.
Indeed, he could be the subject of bids from the Premier League but there is going to be that question mark over whether he would play or not for a top-flight team right now.
At Villa, though, he’d be one of the first on the team-sheet and would surely enjoy the idea of helping lead a club of their size back to the Premier League.
He won’t be cheap, but Villa are one of the few sides to be able to afford him and guarantee him minutes and so it really could be an exciting deal for all involved.
