Aston Villa could almost wave goodbye to their promotion hopes with how badly they have been playing.
Dean Smith was brought in to spark a revival and, although he initially offered the spark that was needed, Villa are back to their old ways and performing badly.
With the group of players they have, it has to be said that the Villans must be doing better than they are, a squad who should have been good enough to get themselves into contention for a top-flight return.
Next season they must work on keeping enough of their good players whilst adding new ones as well.
Midfield quality is something Aston Villa are arguably short of, something that Chelsea’s Marco Van Ginkel could amend.
Van Ginkel, (who is valued at £10.8 million on Transfermarkt) had been ruled out for eight months at the start of the season and although as a shock to many, has now been included in Chelsea’s squad as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas.
Although it is still unlikely he will play, Van Ginkel could put himself in the shop window for the summer by simply staying fit.
This comes after the Dutch midfielder scored 16 times on-loan with PSV last season, which is enough to suggest that Aston Villa should take a punt on acquiring the 25-year-old.
He was made captain of PSV such was his form and even if Aston Villa had to settle for a loan deal themselves, Van Ginkel could make waves in the Championship and go some way to showing Chelsea why they should have given him a chance themselves.
Do you agree Van Ginkel would make a good summer addition… Let us know!
