Aston Villa’s move for Leroy Fer in the closing hours of the January transfer window fell through, however, there are still positives to take from it.
Fer would have been a fantastic addition to help push Villa’s side towards the playoff spots, but it was not to be.
BirminghamLive reported the reasoning for the move falling through as a hamstring injury and that Villa had concerns over the length of time he would be sidelined for.
Despite being at Bodymoor Heath for a medical, it was not to be and Villa moved onto other targets.
On the flip side, there are positives to take out of everything so here are two reasons it could be viewed as good news…
Tom Carroll is a solid alternative
Although, Carroll and Fer may be completely different players with the former being a better mover of the ball, using his range of passing to break through opponents and the latter being more influential in attack and defence, using his quick feet to receive passes well and drive with the ball, they would still both add fine depth to what Villa have.
Carroll will be one the one to do so having been frozen out of the Swansea City side since late October. He can play at the base of the midfield, however, he is more suited to a creative midfield role and will offer a good alternative to Conor Hourihane or John McGinn, but it is the latter, who, stylistically, he is rather similar too.
Had Fer’s deal gone through, Carroll would not be moving to the Midlands so once he has truly got back to full fitness following a lengthy injury, he will be hoping that he can make his mark at Villa.
Opportunities for Alex Prosser?
If Carroll or any of the other midfield options struggle with injuries, Prosser could potentially be drafted up from the U23s.
The 20-year-old midfielder is a physical presence in midfield, but he also has fine technical quality on the ball to make something happen.
If Dean Smith was to provide him with game time, who knows how he could perform? Say if he did impress, then Prosser could have more opportunities on his way if he was to impact the side positively.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
