Aston Villa pulled off a superb 3-0 victory over Derby yesterday in what what Dean Smith’s best result since taking over at the club.
Going into the game, Villa were up against a Debry side that had gone unbeaten in their last seven games. Under Lampard, Derby look like one of the better sides in the league and on paper, it looked as though Villa would be unlikely to get the win but following a dominant performance, Smith’s side proved to be too much for Derby.
Villa were on top for most of the game but couldn’t translate their dominance into an opening goal and had to wait until the 74th minute when John McGinn opened the scoring. As soon as the midfielder scored, the floodgates opened for Smith’s side with Tammy Abraham and Conor Hourihane making it 3-0.
The win now makes it two wins in their last two for Villa and has moved them to 11th, just four points off Derby in sixth.
With the number of quality players in the side, it would be no surprise to see Villa shoot up the table, especially with such a talented manager in Smith at the helm.
Despite such a dominant performance, there were one or two players that didn’t perform well yesterday, namely Neil Taylor.
The fullback was substituted at half-time due to his poor performance, and Ahmed Elmohamady was brought on and in truth had a much better game. The Egyptian was a constant threat down the left and may well find himself starting for the next few games.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
