Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have watched their club lure and obtain over £33 million worth of fresh faces so far this transfer window, and are hoping that the efforts will be enough to gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
And the Shield Gazette reports today that Rafa Benitez has activated the release clause of Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark, as the tyne-siders look to reinforce their back line ahead of the new season.
The 26-year-old has four years left on his current contract but is now set to link up in the North-East next week.
Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern think this would be a fantastic acquisition for Benitez and his team, and think Grant Hanley and Ciaran Clark would be a formidable centre-back pairing.
A handful of Villa supporting punters are annoyed at this news, and don’t think the club should be selling to one of their main rivals for promotion next season.
Newcastle fans….. Happy with the signing of Clark? Will he enhance your backline? Let us know below!
