Pardew Going All Out For One Of The World’s Worst Players. Ever.

Recently I posted an article on here which was essentially a list of players Alan Pardew should look to buy this summer.

If you haven’t seen it, you’re probably not the only one! Basically here’s a quick rundown…I said Newcastle should sign Gervinho, Matt Jarvis and Taye Taiwo. Somebody later commented that Taiwo had already been sold to Benfica. Whilst that’s not strictly true (he’s only thinking about it…big difference) it still pretty much strikes him off our shopping list.

So, who could be Pardew’s third summer signing I thought?? Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, a piano and a lightbulb falling on my head all at once! Well…that’s not true…I saw it in the back of the Daily Mail someone was reading on the bus home from work. I’m afraid I didn’t get a very inspiring answer.

Nigel Reo Coker has been linked with a move from Villa to Newcastle, as his contract talks with the Birmingham based club ground to a halt. Sorry fellow Toon fans, it’s not exactly the exciting prospect we were all hoping for.

That said, Reo Coker isn’t a bad player, he’s just been a bit unlucky. At West Ham he was one of the leaders on and off the pitch, and that was where Alan Pardew first came across the midfielder. He must have seen something in him if he’s thinking of taking him on at Newcastle. At Villa, his career has stalled a little bit, and he must be feeling ready to move on.

Ok, so he’s not going to set the world alight at Newcastle. But he’s a hard-worker, would give us some great cover in the centre of midfield, would be available on a free and is unlikely to ask for astronomical wages. He’s only 26 as well, which fits him in nicely with the average age of the rest of the squad. Be honest, hands up who wouldn’t mind having him at your club?

When we signed Scott Parker, it was much the same story. A player who’d moved on from his first club and found himself a bit adrift. I still think selling players like Parker was one of the reasons why we eventually went down. Aston Villa offered Reo-Coker to Newcastle in January, plus £5.5 million in a bid to sign Joey Barton, so they obviously want shut of him.

I’m not saying Reo-Coker will turn the team around, but he could just be the kind of sensible signings that Ashley and Co. need to start making. It’s not about ‘delusions of grandeur’ anymore…it’s just plain common sense.
