Promotion clause: Aston Villa outcast set for unlikely bonus following promotion – report

Aston Villa will be looking to finish the Championship campaign strongly, despite already having secured a place in the play-offs, whilst the fans in the Transfer Tavern will be expecting them to go up to the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports, Ross McCormack will get a near-£1million bonus if the Villans achieve promotion, even though he has not played a single game for the club. The Scotland international had a falling out with Steve Bruce at the beginning of the year and has been out on loan to Australian side Melbourne City.

The winger is thought to be on one of the better contracts at Villa Park, earning more than £2.3m a year with two years still remaining, however, should the club guide themselves into the top-flight, it is thought to increase to more than £3m.

McCormack has enjoyed his time in the A-League but he is expected to return to the Midlands where he would find it difficult to resolve the issues he and Bruce have had in the past. The 31-year-old signed for Villa in 2016 for £12m and has only made 24 appearances for the side since, with the Villans thought to want to offload him in the summer.

Landlord’s Verdict

Aston Villa fans in the Tavern will be shocked to learn that McCormack could receive an increase of almost £1m should the club achieve promotion, despite not having played a single game for them. The locals will be expecting him to move on in the summer and will hope they can recoup some of the money they paid to bring him in.
