Report discloses the price Aston Villa must pay to land key summer deal

Aston Villa supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team record back-to-back Championship victories with a routine 3-0 success over Sunderland on Tuesday night.

Steve Bruce’s men went into their clash at the Stadium of Light off the back of a 4-2 victory at Sheffield Wednesday in their preceding league encounter, a result which kept them third in the Championship table. And that is where the Villans remain following Tuesday’s win in the North East, with goals from Lewis Grabban and James Chester, as well as an own goal from Byran Oviedo, sealing a comprehensive win for the Midlands giants, keeping them very much in contention for a top two spot and thus a return to the Premier League.

As such, there have been many delighted Villa fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Sun, which discloses the price the Villans will have to pay to lure Sam Johnstone away from Manchester United this summer, namely £6.5 million.

The 24-year-old re-joined the second tier outfit on loan back in August after enjoying a decent spell at the club in the second half of last season, keeping 15 clean sheets and conceding just 32 goals in 35 Championship appearances this term.

And with his chances of dislodging David De Gea as United’s number one remarkably slim, there has been speculation that he could make his loan move to Villa permanent this summer, with the man himself reportedly keen on doing just that.

Yet recent reports detail the price it will take to lure Johnstone away from Old Trafford during the close season, namely £6.5 million, what with Jose Mourinho’s side having opted to extend his contract by 12 months last week.

Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether Villa can afford to make this key deal happen in the summer.

Landlord’s verdict: Sam Johnstone has been in outstanding form for Aston Villa this season following his loan move from Manchester United, having kept 15 clean sheets in just 35 Championship appearances for the club this term.

And there have been murmurings in recent times that the Villans are hoping to make his loan move permanent this summer, although recent reports suggest that it will cost them £6.5 million to convince the Red Devils to part with the 24-year-old.

Promotion to the Premier League could well help Steve Bruce’s cause, but it very much remains to be seen whether the Midlands giants can indeed stump up the cash to land the shot-stopper this summer.
