Review so far: Bruce must be regretting letting Amavi leave

Aston Villa have had a fairly terrible season this year and have been surprisingly poor following a successful campaign last year that saw them reach the Championship Playoff Final.

Under Steve Bruce, Villa showcased one of the worst defences in the league and have so far leaked a terrible 22 goals this season. The Midlands side have been fairly potent going forward but at the back, they’ve been unable to keep clean sheets.

Over the summer, Aston Villa sold the talented Jordan Amavi to Marseille. The Frenchman had been sent on loan to the south of France club last season and played 27 games in Ligue 1 while providing six assists.

In place of the now departed Amavi, Bruce played the severely out of form Neil Taylor and has had to play Alan Hutton out of position, and although the Scotland international has at times played well, Villa have struggled without a top class natural left-back.

It can be argued that Villa were right to sell Amavi after such an unfortunate long-term injury, the level of performance that Amavi has shown since his return to France makes you think Villa were a bit quick to cast off the dynamic fullback.

The position is one of the weakest at the club and Villa will probably look to strengthen in January.  If Bruce had maybe put some trust in the fullback and allowed him to play himself back into form, he might just have had one of the best players in the Championship and one that could help them return to the Premier League.
