Smith must start Bolasie and Whelan against Middlesbrough - Aston Villa

Aston Villa will have their sights set firmly on securing a play-off spot in the current campaign having enjoyed a rich vein of form recently.

The Villains have been completely redefined under Dean Smith but all of their recent hard work could start to unravel if they fail to ensure consistency from here on in.

Aston Villa will travel to the Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough in their next Championship fixture. Tony Pulis’ side failed to secure all three points against Preston North End last time out, so they’ll be desperate to return to winning ways in front of home support later on today.

Therefore, Smith must get his team selection right by selecting these TWO Aston Villa players…

YANNICK BOLASIE

Yannick Bolasie has had to feed off scraps since joining Aston Villa on loan back in the summer, with only a limited amount of minutes to his name at this moment in time.

The winger has plenty of ability and an incredible turn of pace so it comes as some surprise that Smith hasn’t made much use of his since taking over at the club.

However, with Albert Adomah set to spend a period out on the sidelines due to injury, and after witnessing his incredible performance against Nottingham Forest, he surely has to get the nod.

GLENN WHELAN

Glenn Whelan has never really been a standout performer during his time at Villa Park, but it’s what he does off the ball and in defensive areas that makes him a valuable asset.

The experienced midfielder will play a crucial part in keeping a dangerous Middlesbrough midfield that includes the likes of Adam Clayton and George Saville, quiet at the Riverside Stadium later on today, with his tackling and ability to intercept the ball helping protect a vulnerable Villa back line.
