Steve Bruce: This is why Aston Villa could struggle to earn promotion next season

Aston Villa fans in the Transfer Tavern simply can’t wait for the season to be over, with the 2016/17 campaign a bit of a write-off.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last season, the Birmingham-based outfit were hoping to return to the top flight at the first time of asking, but the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo failed to have the desired effect and he was sacked in October.

Steve Bruce has gone some way to steadying the ship but a promotion push now seems beyond the Villans, currently eleven points off a playoff spot with just eight league fixtures of the season remaining.

That is despite Villa spending amongst the most of any Championship side last summer and bringing in a number of players proven at either second-tier or Premier League level, suggesting the club should be enjoying a much stronger season.

Speaking to AVTV, Bruce has revealed he’s confident he can get the club back to the Premier League, but has admitted it wont be easy simply because Villa are a big club.

The gaffer explained to AVTV; “I’m always confident that I can get a team together that can get out of this division. I’ve done it before and it would be terrific to do it here. It’s never going to be easy because of who we are.

“We are the big scalp in this division and everybody wants to turn us over and the teams who come to Villa Park want to perform in the big stadium, big arena so all of the bits and pieces make it difficult but I’m quietly confident that we’re going to be able to mount a challenge and hopefully we’re good enough.”

Of course, Villa fans will be hoping the hangover from their Premier League days is alleviated next season, but Bruce’s comments about being a big scalp highlight how hard it really is for major clubs when they drop down to the Football League.

The likes of Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and even one-time Premier League winners Blackburn are yet to return to the top flight.
