When Steve Bruce was appointed as Aston Villa manager a few months ago there were some Villa fans who were slightly apprehensive.
Not because they didn’t think he could do a good job but because he was once employed by their fierce rivals Birmingham City.
Since, though, that minority has pretty much been totally won over to join the majority in support of the former Manchester United player and you can see why.
The feel good factor is back at Villa with them harbouring hopes of a play-off push and attendances at their famous old home are beginning to look back to normal.
The change is stark to the brief tenure under Roberto Di Matteo where things just seemed to be slipping further out of control and now Bruce has almost managed to repair everything to do with the Italian’s spell.
One thing remains, though, and that’s Ross McCormack.
Whilst other Di Matteo signings have knuckled down under Bruce, the signing from Fulham – heralded as a superb buy then – has been utterly unprofessional and a reminder of where Villa could have headed had things not changed.
McCormack has missed training more than once this season and is a throwback to the players who evidently didn’t care last season, ones Villa have been determined to get shot of.
Bruce is almost there in terms of getting the club fully back on track, then, but before he can do that this McCormack issue needs to be resolved, and the selling of him cannot come quick enough.
