Aston Villa are continuing their hunt for a new manager after sacking Steve Bruce last week.
The Villans will now look to use the international break as an ideal opportunity to consider possible options as they look to stop the rot.
The former midfielder is said to have already submitted his application to take over at Villa Park, with a number of high-profile names already thought to have been linked.
The Bulgarian was a fan favourite during his time in the Midlands and has already spent time working behind the scenes at the club, once working beside Gordon Cowans with the Under-23 side.
Villa are currently struggling to get a win in all competitions at the moment, having won just once in their last 11 games, despite still sitting six points off the relegation places in the Championship.
There’s no doubt that Petrov would be welcomed with open arms at Villa Park, although there would be some concern regarding his managerial abilities.
The Bulgarian has not yet tasted managing at a senior level and with the Villans in desperation for someone to get them out of the mess they are currently in, they could turn to experience instead.
However, they could be prepared to take a risk on the former midfielder, as he will know what it means to be at the club and could be very successful if the chance were taken on him.
