Tom Carroll set for spell on the sidelines

Tom Carroll was a notable omission from the Aston Villa squad on Friday night in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Sheffield United.

The Swansea City midfielder joined The Villans late on Deadline Day on a loan deal and made his debut for the club in their goalless draw with Reading last weekend.

However, it appears he may not be able to make his next appearance for the Villa Park outfit for another two weeks or so.

Following the full-time whistle on Friday, Dean Smith revealed the 26-year-old picked up a ‘slight strain in training’ and would likely be available in the next ‘10 days or so’.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, he said: “He got a slight strain in training the other day so he’s missed the last few days, he’ll probably be back in 10 days or so.”

Carroll is expected to miss the trip to Brentford but could be available for their Midlands derby with West Bromwich Albion next Saturday.

The Verdict:

The news that Carroll has picked up an injury concern in training will be frustrating for Smith and Aston Villa.

The player was arguably brought into the club to act as cover and an immediate replacement for Jack Grealish, but it appears he will now be spending time with him in the treatment room.

Villa have had their injury concerns this season, especially in midfield, but will be pleased that the former Tottenham Hotspur man is not expected to miss too much action.
