Tonight’s Capital One Cup Previews & Predictions

The League cup is rarely a priority for any Premier League side anymore, with the top flight clubs focused more on either survival, or the prospect of qualifying for continental competition. Both of these options carry far more financial gain in comparison to winning a cup, that is now seen more as a testing ground for younger players. However, a trophy is still a trophy, and we look at the Premier League sides chances in their cup games this evening:

  • Chelsea Vs Wolves

Chelsea will rest the majority of their team for this match, the likes of Hazard and Torres most likely rested for the greater prizes in the Premiership, and Champions League. Wolves have made a solid start to their Championship campaign, but with the loss of the likes of Fletcher without suitable replacement, expect Chelsea’s reserve side to sweep aside a toothless Wolves.

Final score: Chelsea 2 – 0 Wolves

  • Crawley Town Vs Swansea City

Swansea have made an excellent start in the top flight under Laudrup, their beautiful, attacking football bringing about the applause of many pundits, and fans alike. Crawley could present an stubborn thorn in the side tonight though, with a great start in League One so far, they will take Swansea all the way.

Final score: Crawley 2 – 2 Swansea (Swansea win on penalties)

  • Leeds United Vs Everton

Leeds are known for knocking off the big guns in cup competitions, and have a manager who knows how to raise the ability of his players when needed in Warnock. They go up against an Everton side, brimming with confidence after some great results in the Premier League. This is where Leeds may hold the advantage, with the Toffees certain to rest key players, Leeds won’t have a better chance to advance to the next round.

Final score: Leeds 2 – 1 Everton

  • Manchester City Vs Aston Villa

The League Cup is the only national competition Mancini hasn’t won at City yet, and it appears that he isn’t particularly interested in it either. Expect City to name a completely new starting 11 to the one that played at the weekend, although that does mean the likes of Tevez may start. Aston Villa will want to appease their fans following their humiliation at the hands of Southampton at the weekend, and will likely field a strong team to combat the Champions reserve team.

Final score: Manchester City 2 – 1 Aston Villa

  • Milton Keynes Dons Vs Sunderland

The Dons are sat in fourth in League One after a great start to their campaign, and will want to further their steady progress with a good cup run. Sunderland will certainly see the League Cup as a winnable competition this season, and will likely field a strong team to avoid the possibility of an upset. Milton Keynes will give them a scare, but expect Sunderland to power through to the next round.

Final score: Milton Keynes Dons 1 – 3 Sunderland

  • Southampton Vs Sheffield Wednesday

Buoyed by their demolition of Aston Villa at the weekend, Southampton will look at the League Cup to give their fans hope of a possible trophy to go in hand with their possible survival. Wednesday have been disappointing in their return to the Championship so far, and will most likely be looking at trying to stay in the league, rather than waste time on a competition they have little hope of winning. Expect the Saints to take this game easily.

Final score: Southampton 3 – 0 Sheffield Wednesday

  • West Ham Vs Wigan

The toughest match to call in tonight’s round of games, both sides will be looking at the League Cup as a competition they can realistically win. West Ham have the home advantage, and a stronger squad to mix and match from to boot, but never count out the determination of Wigan. This game will go to penalties with West Ham edging it out.

Final Score: West Ham 1 – 1 Wigan (West Ham go through on penalties)
