Aston Villa

TT Battle: Dwight Gayle vs Tammy Abraham

West Bromwich Albion will meet Aston Villa on Friday night as both will compete in the West Midlands rivalry.

Both outfits will be looking to take the bragging rights for the area, however, the three points in terms of climbing the Championship table in the hopes of promotion will be more important to both sides.

Darren Moore will likely lean towards Dwight Gayle to have an impact on the match, whilst Dean Smith will want to see Tammy Abraham continue his fine form in front of goal.

Both players, who are on loan from top-flight clubs, would surely like be the difference in the game for their respective teams, however, who would win a battle between them?

Dwight Gayle

West Brom have certainly looked to rectify everything that was wrong last season as they try to make a swift return to the Premier League.

The addition of Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United in the summer was considered to be a huge coup, as he is a proven Championship goalscorer and has shown that ability once again.

The 28-year-old has already hit nine goals in his 17 appearances for the Baggies so far and looks to be one of Moore’s most important men going forward.

Gayle could definitely be considered one of the best loan deals of the summer within England’s second tier and will look to prove that in the West Midlands derby on Friday.

Tammy Abraham

What has been said about Gayle could also equally apply to Tammy Abraham, despite being just 21-years-old.

The Chelsea loanee has hit fine form for Aston Villa since Smith took over the helm at Villa Park and has grabbed himself 11 goals in his 14 Championship appearances this term.

The England Under-21 international showed how clinical he was in the recent fixture against Nottingham Forest, scoring four of their five goals in last months 5-5 draw.

As much as Villa would love to keep Abraham in the Midlands beyond the end of the season will depend on how Chelsea view the situation, however, with their own issues up top, the Blues will likely want to keep him at Stamford Bridge.

TT Grade: B+

The Verdict:

Both Gayle and Abraham are both extremely important and vital to their respective club’s efforts in trying to win promotion back to the Premier League.

There is no doubt that The Hawthorns outfit are in a great position because of the 28-year-old, however, they also managed to keep some of their better players at the club following last season’s relegation.

Abraham, who is valued at £9million per Transfermarkt, still has youth on the former and has shown signs in his short career of being a quality player in the very near future, whether that be at Chelsea or another top-flight side.

For those reasons, the Aston Villa ace wins this particular battle, although expect Gayle to have a say in the derby as well.
