Aston Villa supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Championship season, what with their side seeking to bounce back from their play-off heartache last term.
Steve Bruce’s men put together a fine campaign to finish fourth in the second tier and thus qualify for the end-of-season lottery, before edging past Middlesbrough to reach the Wembley showpiece. However, they were unable to get the job done at the national stadium as a Tom Cairney strike won it for Fulham, thus leaving the Villans facing the prospect of another season in the Championship.
And with reports surfacing about financial concerns surrounding the club, it doesn’t seem overly positive at Villa Park at present, although those money woes could well open the door for a talented youngster to make the step up into the first team this season.
And that man could well be 18-year-old starlet Jacob Bedeau, who made the move to Villa back in 2017 after a short stint at Bury.
The centre back was a regular for Villa’s development side last term in turning out 20 times for the team in Premier League 2, before starting both of their PL2 play-off matches in beating Reading before losing to Brighton & Hove Albion.
And given Villa beat a whole host of top teams to Bedeau’s signature back in January of last year, many may have expected the 18-year-old to have already broken into Bruce’s first team plans, but the fine form of John Terry and James Chester last term somewhat put pay to that.
However, with Terry having left the club at the expiration of his contract, and Chester reportedly subject of interest, the Villans could well be short of central defensive options this season, and they may not have the funds to bring in established replacements.
Thus, the door could well open for 18-year-old Bedeau, who isn’t exactly a novice given that he has tasted the Football League in appearing seven times for Bury in the 2016/17 season, although this would be a much bigger step-up.
Nonetheless, given how highly rated he is, alongside the possible shortcomings Bruce may have in the centre back department come August, this season could well be the one that Bedeau finally makes the step up to the Villa first team.
