Aston Villa can still secure a play-off place in the current campaign, but this will all depend on whether they can ensure consistency from here on in until the end of the season.
Dean Smith could do with bringing in a handful of players this month to turn their season around and aid their play-off push, with defensive issues constantly halting their progress.
Sadly, two of the biggest problems for the Villains has been Neil Taylor’s performances at left-back and their lack of cover at the heart of the defence.
Taylor hasn’t been able to ensure consistency this season as he often gets caught out in possession and is quite error-prone, so Villa will need to bring in reinforcements at left-back to boost their potential play-off push.
However, the Midlands club could soon iron over their underlying issues if they manage to secure a move for Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings. It is reported that Aston Villa are interested in signing Mings on loan this month.
The Englishman hasn’t been able to enjoy regular minutes at the Vitality Stadium since returning from injury, which has opened the door for a January transfer window move.
Mings would be a vital promotion ingredient for many reasons, but two of his strongest attributes are his pace and strength, which are weak points of Taylor’s game. Along with the ability to ensure defensive solidity.
Indeed, signing the 25-year-old would go a long way towards helping their promotion push as he has the versatility to play at the heart of the defence or at left-back, so the Villains could kill two birds with one stone. And, with previous experience in the Championship from his time at Ipswich Town, he should be able to settle down to life at Villa Park rather quickly.
