Why January is the most important month in Aston Villa’s recent history

While life at Aston Villa has improved somewhat for the fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern, there’s little doubt this season has been a disappointing one.

After a summer that promised oh so much at Villa Park, the fact the club remain seven points off the Play-Offs is quite frankly ridiculous and indicative of the mess they’ve been in for years.

Perhaps the idea of the changing the whole philosophy of a club that has been on their knees for the past few years was too ambitious, though the fact they at least remain in with a shout of the top six can serve as a slice of encouragement.

Which is exactly why the January transfer market represents perhaps the most important month in years for those at Villa Park.

Some astute additions in the New Year market, making good use of the hefty funds available unlike their activity in the summer, could potentially give Villa the impetuous to finish in the Play-Offs spots.

A team as talented as the one at Steve Bruce’s disposal should really be battling for the title and as the ex-Birmingham City coach tries to change a mentality that has plagued the club for years, some short-term additions to guarantee one last surge can change the whole complexion of their campaign.

Considering the talent in the squad right now, a quick-fire return to the Premier League is not out of the realms of possibility, something that can completely change the feeling around the club.

They need to be smart, far smarter than they were in the summer, so January is a monumentally huge month. All is not lost at Aston Villa just yet.
