Chelsea fans here at the Football Transfer Tavern are expressing more than a little surprise at the news that their on loan keeper Thibaut Courtois may want to leave according to the Daily Mail.
Of course the club already have world class stopper Petr Cech on their books and even had a bid for young England international Jack Butland rejected last week. Add to this their current number two Ross Turnbull and you certainly have a busy goalkeeping situation at the London club.
Courtois has been on loan to Atletico Madrid both this term and last and has been a major part in their success making more and more of a name for himself. Atleti have made it very clear that they want to land the keeper on a permanent basis, yet this is not Chelsea’s only problem. According to a December report by Marca, Barcelona are also sniffing around the Belgian who has made it perfectly obvious he does not feel like returning to Stamford Bridge to sit on the bench as Cech’s understudy.
After a meeting between the keeper’s parent club and representatives, Courtois senior claimed: “They have two world class keepers, and it is probably fair to say Thibaut has developed into a No 1 more quickly than anyone could have expected. He is a great keeper for Spanish football, because he has adapted to the style of play over there and has the height to command his area.”
Now the ball remains in Chelsea’s court, but it seems they certainly face a fight to hang on to their keeper.
