Sky Sports have revealed that Spanish side Atletico Madrid have entered the race for Monterrey striker Humberto Suazo, a player who has recently been linked with Tottenham Hotspur. The 28-year-old Chile international was crucial to Monterrey as the Mexican side won their league this year and his performances have interested clubs in Europe who see Suazo as a great finisher. Things will be made more difficult though by Monterrey placing a £18 million price tag on the striker’s head.
Suazo, after a slow start to his career, proved himself a great goalscorer with San Luis, Audax Italiano and Colo-Colo in his homeland before his 2007 move to Mexico for $8 million. Suazo made a slow start to his Monterrey career and was linked with a move away from the club but no club was willing to pay the asking price and so Suazo stayed where he has hit form and boasts a record of more than 1 goal per 2 games for the Mexican champions.
Tottenham and Atletico are both going to have to put their utmost into signing the striker if they want him though as Monterrey are far from eager to sell. Club president Jorge Urdiales revealed
“I am very proud that it is being said that Atletico Madrid is interested in a player of our team, but for the moment there isn’t anything formal. We are going to sit down and have conversations when we receive an offer for Suazo, but it’s 20million Euros that have to be paid for him because he is still under contract with us and we are not going to sell him for less money.”
[Is there any substance to this and should this rumour Fly or Die?]
