West Ham supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side humbled by fellow Premier League strugglers Brighton at the AMEX Stadium on Saturday, thus suffering their 11th defeat of the campaign.
David Moyes’ men went into their clash with the Seagulls having won two and drawn the other four of their preceding six Premier League matches, a run of form which put some distance between themselves and the bottom three. Yet the Hammers now find themselves just three points clear of danger as goals from Glenn Murray, Jose Izquierdo, and Pascal Gross secured a routine 3-1 success for Chris Hughton’s side on Saturday, thus moving them level on points with Moyes’ West Ham in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many frustrated Hammers fans in the Tavern in the last few days, yet their mood is likely to be improved by a recent report from The Sun, which suggests that their club are already turning their attentions to the summer by eyeing up a £15 million summer move for Manchester City midfielder Patrick Roberts.
The 21-year-old is currently on loan at Scottish giants Celtic and has been since January 2016, in which time he has hugely impressed with 18 goals and 24 assists in 72 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side, helping them to two Scottish Premiership titles as well as other domestic trophies.
And it appears that the former England Under-20 international is attracting the interest of Moyes’ West Ham, who are reportedly seeking to rival Leicester City for the youngster’s signature in the summer, with it expected that Man City boss Pep Guardiola will sanction his departure at the end of the season.
And with the Hammers reportedly interested in Roberts during the January window, he’s clearly a player Moyes wants at the London Stadium, but whether they are indeed able to lure him to East London remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Patrick Roberts has come on leaps and bounds during his two-year stint on loan at Scottish giants Celtic, but whether that is enough to keep him at parent club Manchester City is uncertain.
Boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly ‘expected’ to allow the 21-year-old to move on in the summer, which is sure to be good news for David Moyes’ West Ham, who are reportedly ready to rival Leicester City for the youngster’s signature.
The Hammers were also thought to be keen on the midfielder during January to underline their desire to bring him to the London Stadium, but whether they will stump up the £15 million to lure him to East London very much remains to be seen.
