Newcastle United supporters have been pretty deflated in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team bow out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage for the second successive season after going down 3-0 to Chelsea on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men booked their place in the last 32 of the world’s oldest club competitions courtesy of 3-1 success over Luton Town in the previous round, which was only the second third round match they have won in the last six years. Yet their run in this term’s FA Cup came to an end on Sunday as a Michy Batshuayi brace alongside a Marcos Alonso free-kick was enough to seal a comfortable victory for Antonio Conte’s Blues, thus leaving the Magpies to focus purely on avoiding relegation from the Premier League come May.
Subsequently, there have been many despondent Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, although they are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that ‘scouts’ have been sent by the club to watch Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen.
The 21-year-old made the move to the KCOM Stadium back in 2014 after beginning his professional career at Hereford United, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 11 goals in just 27 Championship games this season, helping Nigel Adkins’ side to 21st place in the second tier.
And the young attacker must be doing something right as reports suggest that Newcastle, as well as a whole host of other Premier League clubs, sent ‘representatives’ to watch Barron in action against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, a game in which he scored and laid on an assist.
And with Benitez’s men clearly in need of attacking reinforcements, they could well make a move for the talented winger before Wednesday’s deadline.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United’s tally of 22 goals in 24 Premier League games this season is simply not good enough and must be improved if they are to avoid relegation, and it appears that manager Rafa Benitez is doing all he can to bolster his attacking ranks.
And that’s because the Magpies reportedly had ‘representatives’ in attendance to watch Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen on Saturday, with the talented attacker doing his case the world of good with a goal and an assist in the Tigers’ 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.
And with 11 goals in 27 Championship games this season, the 21-year-old clearly has a bright future ahead of him, but whether he is the man to help guide Newcastle to Premier League safety is questionable.
