Attentions turn to 24-year-old in Benitez’s quest for attacking reinforcements at Newcastle

Newcastle United supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in recent days after seeing the Magpies lose 3-2 at home to Leicester City on Saturday, thus suffering a sixth Premier League defeat in their last seven matches.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a solid start to life back in the top tier by winning four of their opening nine games, but things haven’t gone at all well since then for the North East giants in picking up just one point out of a possible 21. And their rotten run continued on Saturday as goals from Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray, as well as an own goal from Ayoze Perez, sealed a 3-2 success for Claude Puel’s Foxes at St James’ Park, with an opener from Joselu and a third goal of the campaign for Dwight Gayle not enough to prevent a ninth Premier League defeat of the season, and thus their fall to 16th place in the table.

Consequently, there have been several disappointed and angry Magpies fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are likely to intrigued by a recent report from ESPN, which outlines some potentially key information regarding Benitez’s quest for attacking reinforcements.

And that’s because they report that the North East giants are lining up a move for Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye in January, who was linked with a move to Celtic and Chelsea earlier in the year.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a sparkling season for the Serbian outfit with a stunning 22 goals in just 27 games for the club, adding to his tally of 15 goals in 19 games in the second half of last term.

And the Ghana international has reportedly attracted the interest of Celtic and Chelsea in recent times, while recent reports suggest that Benitez’s Newcastle, as well as Alan Pardew’s West Brom, are also interested in his services.

And with the Magpies in dire need of attacking reinforcements, having netted just 16 times in their 16 league games thus far, it’s a move they may well seek to make come the New Year.

Landlord’s verdict: Much was made of Newcastle United’s struggle to land key transfer targets during the summer, to the point that manager Rafa Benitez reportedly wanted out as boss such was his frustration with the board.

And one area he most likely hoped to strengthen was the forward ranks, and one man he is reportedly hoping to get in better late than never is Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boayke, scorer of 37 goals in just 46 games in 2017.

And with 22 in 27 this term, 14 of which coming in their 13 league games, the 24-year-old is certainly making huge strides in Serbia, so much so that Celtic and Chelsea were reportedly linked with his services earlier in the season.

But with Newcastle in need of attacking reinforcements, it’s a move Benitez and the club’s hierarchy must make in January.
