The Newcastle United fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern of late due to their side’s impressive form in the Premier League, and now they have secured survival they are beginning to look forward to the summer transfer window.
Rafa Benitez’s side have been on a brilliant run of form in recent months which has seen them climb away from the bottom-three and comfortably into the safe-haven of mid-table obscurity. The Magpies were widely tipped to be stuck within the midst of an intense relegation battle this season, but they have proven their doubters wrong with a strong finish to the season.
The progress they have made suggests the squad Benitez has at his disposal could potentially mount a genuine challenge for Europa League football next season, providing they make a handful of wise additions in the summer. Benitez will need to be ambitious with his transfer targets if he wishes to take Newcastle to the next level, and one player he would be foolish not to make an enquiry for is Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt).
Batshuayi is currently playing his trade at Borussia Dortmund following his temporary loan move in the January transfer window, and he has done brilliantly during his spell Germany so far. The Belgian international has netted 9 goals from 14 appearances for the German giants, but a ligament injury appears to have prematurely ended his season.
However, the quality of his performances will certainly be forcing Dortmund’s hierarchy to consider making a permanent offer for his services in the summer. Whether they will be able to afford Betshuayi or not remains to be seen, and if they are priced out of a potential deal then Newcastle should do everything they can to sign him on loan next season.
Unless the Magpies are taken over by a super-rich investor, it’s extremely unlikely they will be able to afford to sign Batshuayi on a permanent basis, so a season long loan deal represents the only viable way they can bring him to St James’ Park.
Newcastle are crying out for the presence of a prolific centre-forward within their ranks as their progress will undoubtedly be restricted with the likes of Dwight Gayle and Joselu spearheading the attack for another season.
With that to consider, the club simply have to be ambitious in the summer window by making a loan bid for Batshuayi – a striker who could transform Newcastle’s fortunes and fire them into Europe next season.
