Newcastle United supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team start 2018 with a much-needed 1-0 victory over fellow Premier League strugglers Stoke City on New Year’s Day.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Potters off the back of an underwhelming 0-0 draw at home to Brighton a few days earlier, a result which left them just a point clear of the bottom three. Yet the Magpies got back to winning ways in Staffordshire on Monday as an Ayoze Perez strike 17 minutes from time was enough to seal a sixth league victory of the campaign for the North East giants, at the same piling the pressure on under-fire Stoke boss Mark Hughes.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, which suggests that their side are in the race to land Las Palmas attacker Jonathan Viera this month.
The 28-year-old came up through the ranks at the La Liga outfit and has since gone on to play 170 times for the club, bagging 42 goals and laying on 26 assists in the process.
Short spells at Valencia and Standard Liege between 2012 and 2015 saw him try his hand elsewhere, yet he returned to Las Palmas three years ago and has since proven his worth once again, including seven goals and eight assists last season in their run to 11th place in the Spanish top-flight.
And it appears that his fine form for the La Liga strugglers, who sit bottom of the division, has attracted the interest of some Premier League clubs, with Newcastle reportedly interested in landing the Spain international this month, as are Sean Dyche’s Burnley.
And with reports suggesting that Viera could be ‘available’ this month such have been Las Palmas’ difficulties this term, alongside the Magpies’ need for greater attacking options, a move to the North East could well take place come the end of January.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United have managed just 20 goals in 22 Premier League games so far this season, a tally which simply has to improve if they are to preserve their top-flight status come May.
And manager Rafa Benitez is seeking to do exactly that as reports suggest that he is interested in luring Las Palmas’ Jonathan Viera away from the Spanish side this month, scorer of seven goals in their run to 11th place in La Liga last term.
Yet with Newcastle in need of the sort of attacker Viera is, it could turn out to be money well spent if they do firm up their interest in the 28-year-old.
