There has been a sensational claim in the London Evening Standard who report that whilst Rafael Benitez currently has a job at Chelsea, they have placed former boss Avram Grant on stand-by.
The club are fully aware that not only are they in danger of losing a place in the top four which would have a major effect on them next season but they also know just how unpopular Benitez is. That will only intensify after the latest rant from the Spaniard and the club are in turmoil – something that they are only too familiar with in recent seasons.
Abramovich and the Chelsea board are growing increasingly confident that in the summer they will be able to lure former manager and the self styled Special One – Jose Mourinho back to the Bridge – something that will go down a treat with fans. Add to this rumoured moves for Radamel Falcao and a host of other top European names and there is growing excitement for next season at the club.
All of this will matter not should the club miss out on the top four and Abramovich is ready to wield the axe should form and morale dip any lower than it already has. Grant of course is no stranger to stepping in and filling the void – having done so when Mourinho departed all those seasons ago.
