The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted with their side’s performance in the Manchester derby last weekend as they recovered from 2 goals down to claim a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
The resident Red Devils propping up our bar have been in fine spirits this week thanks to the second-half impact of their controversial midfielder Paul Pogba. The French international has divided opinion this season amongst football fans all over the world, but his timely second-half brace against Pep Guardiola’s city slickers was a subtle reminder of the quality he undoubtedly possesses in abundance.
However, Pogba’s return to form has done nothing to deter rumours which suggest he is destined for a transfer away from Old Trafford this summer, as The Daily Star believe he could be involved in a puzzling swap deal. According to the report, United are interested in signing Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, but they will have to pay £50 million and allow Pogba and Anthony Martial to move in the opposite direction.
The potential deal in question would be one of the worst value for money transfer deals in the history of the Premier League, and certainly the worst completed by United. Both Pogba and Martial have failed to live up to their true potential so far this season, but that fact alone should not force the club to cash in on the French pairing.
At 25 and 22-years-old respectively, the aforementioned players require time and patience before they begin to consistently deliver in the Premier League. There is no doubting that Neymar is an immense talent with plenty to offer the club, but at some point United need to allow their team to gel together, as there has been plenty of chopping and changing at Old Trafford in the last half-decade.
Jose Mourinho has watched on as his old rival Pep Guardiola has taken the Premier League by storm this season with his Manchester City side and, that trend is set to continue if United go through with the proposed deal for Neymar. United will certainly have to be ambitious with the calibre of player they target in the summer in order to instigate a significant improvement in their results, but keeping hold of their top players such as Martial and Pogba should be their immediate priority.
