Bad for Chelsea: Problems pile up for Conte as season goes from bad to worse

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t sure that things could get much worse. The Blues lost once again over the weekend, and in very disappointing fashion. In truth, the Blues never really stood a chance against Man City, and that’s a very concerning prospect in terms of their long-term hopes.

Unfortunately, though, the score when the final whistle was blown wasn’t the only negative result of the game. Indeed, according to The Times, the nature of the defeat has drawn the ire of several of Chelsea’s first team players.

The Times is reporting that several players within the Chelsea squad were frustrated with Antonio Conte’s tactics against the Citizens, with the general feeling being that they were too negative. Furthermore, there is also said to be a concern that Conte was not placing enough focus on the game – instead using it as a training exercise ahead of their clash with Barcelona next week.

This is hugely concerning for Chelsea. So-called player power has been a big problem at Stamford Bridge over the years, and it appears to be rearing its ugly head once again.

The last thing Conte needs right now is problems behind the scenes, especially given the period that they’re currently at within the season. Chelsea’s form needs to improve over the coming week or two, and so Conte certainly has a task on his hands.

The Blues are set to take on Crystal Palace this weekend, before they take on Barcelona at the Nou Camp next Wednesday.

Landlord’s Verdict

This is a huge problem for Antonio Conte. One thing that the Italian has had so far is squad unity, but now even that appears to be falling away. If that goes any further, he could lose one of his last major plus points at Stamford Bridge.

It’s tough to disagree with these sentiments, though. Chelsea were very poor against City, and let’s not forget, the Blues were Premier League champions last term. It wasn’t a David vs Goliath affair, even if Antonio Conte set it up as such.

The Italian has a big week ahead of him, and if things go badly, it could be game over for him.
