Bad news for Chelsea as important deal takes frustrating turn

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted with Thibaut Courtois’ recent form…

The Belgian goalkeeper was very impressive last season, becoming a vital last line of defence for the Blues. Though players like N’Golo Kante, David Luiz and Gary Cahill earned much of the applause, the fans in the Transfer Tavern certainly don’t underestimate the importance of Courtois. Petr Cech’s boots were always going to be tough to fill, but Courtois has done so seamlessly.

There has been a real air of disappointment in the pub today, then, on the back of reports from the Times suggesting that talks between Courtois and Chelsea over a new deal have stalled. According to the Times, Courtois’ wage demands have halted talks between the two parties, despite the fact that he has just two years remaining on his current deal.

Unsurprisingly, this has immediately generated fear of a departure for the Belgian this summer, with teams including Real Madrid on the hunt for a new goalkeeper. Whilst no such link has been made as of yet, that hasn’t stopped supporters worrying.

Of course, Courtois has proven himself as one of Europe’s best over the last few years, continually improving and maintaining consistency between the sticks for the Blues.

A Golden Glove win last season was certainly deserved, and our landlord thinks that Chelsea should certainly listen to his demands – as they cannot afford to lose him.
