The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been patiently awaiting confirmation that Romelu Lukaku will be joining the club this summer…
However, it appears as though they’re going to have to wait for quite a while yet, with The Mirror reporting that Chelsea are some way off confirming a deal for the Belgian. Indeed, it is noted that the likes of Man Utd and Bayern Munich are still in the race for him, with the Blues still yet to reach any sort of agreement.
This has come as a real blow for the Blues in the pub, with many expecting the deal to go through with relative ease. It appeared as though both the player and Chelsea were keen to get the deal done, but seemingly, that isn’t enough to get the deal across the line. Rather, it appears as though Everton could be looking to hold on to Lukaku, which would certainly make sense.
The Belgian has been one of Everton’s most important players in recent years, and a 25 league goal tally last year was crucial as Everton fought their way up the table. If the club were to lose him, that would come as a crushing blow for Ronald Koeman.
That being said, if Costa leaves, Chelsea will need a forward, and Lukaku is likely the best fit. Proven in the Premier Leauge, Conte will need someone that can come in and do a job immediately, and the Belgian is likely going to be able to deliver on that. If that is the case, our landlord thinks that it could only be a matter of time until the Chelsea fans in the pub are celebrating. He won’t come cheap, though.
