The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see a few new defenders move to Stamford Bridge this summer…
Next season will be a new era for Chelsea, with John Terry leaving the club upon the expiry of his current contract with the Blues. Though a peripheral figure last season, his departure will leave a seismic gap in the Blues first team, and it doesn’t look like that gap will be filled by Leonardo Bonucci.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are struggling to convince the Italian to swap Turin for London this summer, with the Juventus defender likely to stay put at the Italian side this summer.
This has come as a big blow for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, with many in the pub touting him as the perfect John Terry replacement. Whilst he is no spring chicken, given that he is 30-years-old, the Italian has years of experience and knowledge – and that is the main thing that Chelsea will be losing as John Terry departs the club.
What’s more, there is no doubting that he is one of Europe’s best defenders, with the Italian forming a formidable partnership with Giorgio Chiellini in recent years. Of course, the Italian also knows Conte – having played under the boss – and so his transition would likely have been a seamless one.
Indeed, for many, the idea of Bonucci moving to Stamford Bridge was considered a dream move, but it doesn’t look like it is going to happen.
