It has been a tough day for the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern…
With twists and turns on every corner, Coutinho’s future is no clearer this evening despite a statement from the club signalling their intention to keep him – with the Brazilian also said to have handed in a transfer request.
Lost in the shuffle, somewhat surprisingly, came the big news that the Brazilian is set to miss Liverpool’s season opener against Watford this weekend. As confirmed by Sky Sports News, Coutinho reportedly has a back problem – and so will be unavailable for the Reds.

This is, of course, only going to ramp up speculation surrounding his future, though there is no evidence to suggest that the injury isn’t genuine.
In truth, all this news – particularly the injury – couldn’t have come at a worse time for Liverpool. It has been a long summer, and whilst the Brazilian has been training with the club, unfortunately, he has had a problem on the eve of the return of competitive football.
Still, Liverpool will be expected to win the game comfortably with or without Coutinho, and Klopp won’t be able to use his absence as an excuse.
This is a bit of a problem for Liverpool, with the Reds not exactly blessed with players of Coutinho’s quality.
With Adam Lallana also set to miss the game through injury, the Reds could very well lack creativity – and so the onus will likely be on new signing Mohamed Salah to create some magic.
