The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their side to retain their most important players…
Fortunately, over the last 18 month or so, Tottenham have been on a real mission to tie down their most important players. Key figures like Harry Kane and Dele Alli have both signed on for the long-haul, leaving no doubts over where their respective futures lie.
Tottenham’s very rigid pay structure is working wonders for the club at the moment, but it appears as though it could prove problematic for at least one key Tottenham star.
According to the Daily Mail, whilst Tottenham are keen to agree terms with Toby Alderweireld over a new deal, the defender has been hesitant to sign as of yet – as he is seeking pay parity with Tottenham’s highest earners. The defender is well aware that he can earn much more elsewhere, and whilst there is no real danger of an immediate departure, his hesitance to sign combined with reported interest from Man City could feasibly pose a problem for the Lilywhites.
Both with regards to transfer fees and wages, Tottenham have been hesitant to spend big money as of late, though it appears as though that will have to change if they want to secure the Belgian defender’s long-term future.
He has been very impressive over the last year or two, and he has formed a fantastic partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane.
Toby Alderweireld is one of Europe’s best defenders, there’s no doubt about that, and he would be able to feature for any number of Europe’s top sides.
He recognises that at 28-years-old, this is likely to be his last big contract, and so he will want to make sure that he is paid what he feels he is worth.
Tottenham need to tread carefully here, as they can’t risk upsetting one of their most important players.
