Stoke City fans in the Transfer Tavern will be drowning their sorrows after their side were finally relegated from the Premier League with a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.
A number of their stars are now expected to leave the side, however, one of them has launched a scathing attack on the recruitment process the Bet365 Stadium outfit have, believing it to have been a reason as to why they will play Championship football next year.
According to the Times, Jack Butland has called the club’s transfers as “farcical” and has questioned a number of the player’s commitment and character towards the team’s efforts to remain in the top-flight, adding that Paul Lambert was up against it from the start.
Indeed, the report also suggests that newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers would be his most likely destination this summer now the Potters have been relegated.
“The whole recruitment process needs looking at to be honest,” he said.
“We’ve gone into a game here – and over the past few months – with half of the squad dotted around the world, not even involved.
“Some are out on loan. But then there have been signings who aren’t even part of the squad for all kinds of reasons, whether it be discipline, whether it be lack of performance. So you’ve got to look at that – the type of characters. Too many of the recent investments have been completely unused and that’s unacceptable. That’s got to be looked at because it’s been farcical really.”
The Stoke locals in the Tavern will be in agreement with Butland about some of the players that have arrived and will be looking for the club to change a number of faces in the summer as they prepare for life in the Championship, although they will almost certainly be without the goalkeeper.
