Baggies hoping to rescue Liverpool defender

News has reached us in the Football Transfer Tavern that West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke is looking for a new centre back, and Alan Nixon of the Daily Mirror believes he is set to return his old club in order to get his man.

Clarke is hoping to sign Liverpool centre back Sebastian Coates on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Clarke was at Liverpool as Kenny Dalglish’s number two when Coates was signed in the summer of 2011, although the Uruguay international has struggled to dislodge the regular defensive partnership of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger in that time, and is still behind Anfield legend Jamie Carragher in the pecking order.

He has played 90 minutes just once this campaign, starting Liverpool’s first home match against Manchester City, but he has managed just 49 minutes of Premier League football since.

Clarke is hoping he can resurrect the young defenders career, and Brendan Rodgers has already said he is happy for Coates to go on loan to get regular game time.

Whether Coates will be bought in as a replacement for Jonas Olsson remains to be seen, with the Swede still attracting strong interest from QPR who BBC Sport revealed had a bid turned down last week. The Hoops themselves have already signed Loic Remy and Tal Ben Haim this January.

Liverpool fans. Would you be happy for Coates to move on? Vote in our polls below.
