Everton fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing the Toffees make a poor start to the season.

Ronald Koeman's side went down 1-0 at home to Burnley last time out to suffer a fourth defeat of the campaign, leaving them 16th in the division and a far cry away from the seventh place they managed last term.

No wins in their Europa League group stage campaign either has raised the pressure immeasurably on manager Koeman, who faces a pivotal month ahead if he is to remain as the Toffees chief, starting away at Brighton on Sunday.

Part of their problem has been scoring goals, they've managed just four in the league so far, and it appears that they are looking at Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost as the answer to those troubles, as per The Sun.

The 28-year-old bagged a remarkable 34 goals in just 31 Primeira Liga games for the Portuguese heavyweights last season, a tally which was 15 goals higher than the next highest scorer in the division.

And with four goals in eight games already this time round, the Dutch international continues to underline his incredible credentials in front of goal, the sort of credentials Everton could do with in a bid to arrest their slump.

And should the Toffees indeed seal a deal for the £14.4 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) in the New Year, here is how their frontline could look come the close of the winter transfer window...

Gylfi Sigurdsson

Everton splashed out £45 million on Gylfi Sigurdsson during the summer, but so far have seen very little from the Iceland international.

The 28-year-old scored nine goals and laid on 13 assists for Swansea City last season and ultimately played a pivotal role in keeping them in the Premier League, and it was form which saw the Toffees break the bank to bring him to Goodison Park back in August.

However, the attacking midfielder has yet to score or lay on an assist in six Premier League appearances for Koeman’s side, with his only goal so far a beauty in their Europa League qualifier away at Hajduk Split on August 24.

More will be expected of Sigurdsson as the season progresses, especially if Everton want to be challenging in the top half of the table once again come May.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

There aren’t many Everton players who can come out of the season thus far with much credit, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin is certainly one of those who can.

The 20-year-old only made his Toffees debut back in December 2016 but has this term become an important member of the side, having scored three goals and laid on two assists in 14 appearances for Koeman’s team.

It is somewhat surprising, especially given their attacking woes, that the England Under-20 World Cup winner has only started four times in the Premier League so far, especially as he offers Everton something slightly different, given that he is quick but also strong in the air.

Playing Calvert-Lewin either down the right or through the middle could reap the rewards for Koeman as the season progresses.

Bas Dost

Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost enjoyed a sensational season in front of goal last time out, having bagged a remarkable 34 goals in just 31 league games for the Portuguese outfit.

His league-high tally, which was 15 more than the next best Tiquinho Soares of Porto, wasn’t enough to secure the side the title, but it has certainly aroused interest from other parts of Europe, with Everton themselves looking at the Dutchman as the potential answer to their striking woes.

And with four goals in eight league games already this term, Dost doesn’t appear to be letting up, but it’s not just his goal-scoring which should interest Koeman, it’s his all round play.

The 28-year-old is strong and is able to bring others into play, and with the likes of Sigurdsson and Calvert-Lewin also in attack, both of whom are technically very gifted and can pick a pass and a cross, he could be the ideal striker to solve their problems.
